Running a Product Drive
A product drive is a terrific way to collect products from your friends, family, colleagues, and community!
Running a product drive can be as complicated as you would like. The only thing you really need is a place to collect products and a way to get the word out, but there are a few considerations to make your drive as successful as you would like it to be. Read on to explore them.
We put together a checklist to guide you along! Open it in a separate tab and fill it out as you go. Finish the checklist, hit submit, and we’ll get in touch to support you as you support us!
Early Decisions
What products would you like to collect?
You can run a diaper drive, a period product drive, or a mixture of both! There is no obligation to collect both; you might have reason to believe your audience won’t be interested in period products or you might know they’d be very excited to donate tampons!
How would you like to collect them?
An in-person drive is the simplest, but requires a physical location. Online drives use a wishlist that people can buy products from to have them shipped to you. A hybrid drive is a mix of the other two: a place people can drop off and an address they can mail to.
When do you want to collect them?
There’s no bad time to run a drive, but it often works best to run the drive for at least a week. Two weeks is often more successful, and some people see benefits running for longer. Give some thought to events happening at the same time as your drive and plan accordingly!
Next Steps
Announce your drive ahead of time
If you’re using social media, you might post the week before to let people know that a drive is coming up. You might also post physical flyers! Visit the link below for flyers and social media posts!
Begin you drive
The day your drive is set to begin, make sure you have everything ready. For in-person drives, that might mean setting out a collection bin. For online drives, check that your wishlist is accessible and people have a way to get to it. Announce that your drive has begun and tell people the ways they can contribute.
Periodically remind people
If your drive is running for two weeks, you might consider a reminder at the start of the second week, another reminder the day before it ends, and a third reminder on the last day of the drive. Typically, people want to contribute but are too busy to remember until it’s too late. Help them remember!
Tips and Tricks
Offer an incentive
If you’re a business, you might give a discount for donating. In a casual environment, you might offer a prize to whoever donates the most.
Attach it to an event
Make a box of tampons the price of admission for an event or run the drive during another community event.
Talk about it often
People are forgetful; algorithms are weird. Talk and post about your drive frequently! Spreading the word is the hardest part.
Provide a way to donate money
Many people will want to simply make a cash donation using their phone. Give them a way to do it!
