Playing for Period Poverty
What do Mario Kart, tampons, and the city of Kalamazoo have in common? Not much, but we found a way to mush them together anyway! May is home to Period Poverty Awareness Week. We decided to go all out this year, and you’re invited.
First things first, Period Poverty Awareness Week is a weeklong campaign started by the Alliance for Period Supplies to raise awareness of the nationwide issue of period poverty. From May 20th to May 28th, period supply banks and other basic needs organizations are encouraged to engage their local community and spread the word about period poverty.
To kick things off, we’re hosting Period Power Up! On May 18th, from noon to 2 pm, we’re having a drop-in event at LFG Gaming Bar where folks can repackage a period kit, play some games, and buy some food and drinks. Kids are welcome, and there will be opportunities to win free arcade tokens!
Period Power Up isn’t a volunteer event. Instead, it’s a time to celebrate the work Care Collective has accomplished so far and raise awareness of the ongoing struggle many Americans face when accessing period products. Help us raise awareness, bring a friend along, and have some fun! No sign-up is required, but you can visit our website to learn more.
Following the kick-off on May 18th, we will receive a proclamation from the City of Kalamazoo declaring May 20th to May 28th of 2024 as Period Poverty Awareness Week. This proclamation shows that Kalamazoo stands behind our work and all the volunteers, partners, and donors who make it possible.
If you can’t join us for the kick-off, make sure to follow along on social media for statistics and other ways to get involved. It’s a long road ahead, but we can end period poverty together.
